Papua fascinates not only with Raja Ampar and the splendor of snowy Puncak Jaya. However, this province at the eastern tip of Indonesia also holds many other interesting things, including mysterious things. One of them is Alien Paintings in Papua Cave.

Alien-Like Painting

This mysterious painting was first discovered in the Kontilola Cave natural tourist area, Baliem Valley, about 23 kilometers from Wamena Airport. Reaching the mouth of the cave is not easy, because the location is on a quite steep hill.

At first glance, there is nothing strange about the appearance of Kontolila Cave. The unusual sight was only seen when entering the dark and quite spacious hall. On the walls there is an ancient painting containing four mysterious figures that resemble aliens.

It is called an alien because the figure in the cave wall painting resembles a human, but has a large oval head without hair. All four have only four fingers. Not a few people liken his appearance to the alien character in the famous film E.T in the 80s.

Uniquely, the mysterious cave wall paintings are located at a height. It is located almost touching the ceiling of the cave which is tens of meters high. The discovery of alien paintings in Papua Cave is even more interesting if you consider that prehistoric humans did not have the technology to paint in such unusual places.

Not the Only One

The Kontilola Cave paintings are not the only discovery that weaves together the mystery of alien paintings in Papua cave. A similar image was also found on the rocks of Tanjung Bicari located in Kaimana Regency. The difference is, the pictures scattered in the cliff area this time do not record human-like figures, but rather strange creatures with large heads and three horns.

The discovery of paintings at Tanjung Bicari then gave rise to a story that was almost the same as the Kontolila Cave wall paintings. These paintings were both painted in high places far from the reach of ordinary people. Not only that, both of them also display the form of unique creatures that do not usually appear in ancient paintings elsewhere.

Ancestors and Creatures of Papuan Mythology

The news about alien paintings in Kontolila Cave and Tanjung Bicari was immediately refuted thanks to the help of experts. Since 2008, a number of researchers from the Papua Archaeological Center have revealed that the alien figure in the painting is actually an interpretation of the form of the ancestors of the local community.

According to researchers, Kontolila Cave was once a shelter for prehistoric humans. They painted imaginary forms of ancestors and mythological creatures onto the walls of cave houses as a form of respect. Apart from having religious meaning, cave wall paintings also mark traditional territory, so their position must be high.

The answer to the mystery of alien paintings in Papua cave may not be surprising to some people. However, this does not diminish the true potential of the natural riches and mysteries of the land of Papua. Who knows, other, more unique paintings are still buried among the mysterious cave network on the unexplored Earth of Cendrawasih.
